Day 1
Today marks the first day of our research attachment with NTU Material Science Engineering (MSE) Faculty. We were assigned to the project called Biomimetic and Bioinsipired Materials.
Our first encounter with our mentors, who are PhD students Ms Zhang Lihong and Mr Ding Dawei, was at the MSE learning studio. A general overview of material science and lab safety measures were taught. Soon after, lab coats and safety googles were issued before we visited the labs to see how experiments were carried out.
We then followed Da Wei on his experiments. His interest is in a particular protein which has a special property. Excited in utilizing it, he talks about extracting the proteins and then manufacturing them. This reminds us about our O level Biology science on how artificial insulin was produced.
In the afternoon, we visited the lab at MSE to see Dawei carry out Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), to check whether crystalline structures exist. Sample and reference are needed for investigation. A graph generated (similar to the picture post below) shows the heat flow between the two substance. A wide peak was found to be around 100 degree indicating the evaporation of water inside the sample.
In the next post, we provide you with more details on the procedures! Stay tuned!
